Global Seed Network Heros!

We thank the brave souls who nurture the seeds to make this dream come true.

We dedicate this site to the memory of ELIZABETH C.  SCHWARTZ  -
generous donor to our group and believer in our goals and missions.
Her bequest will support future generations by advancing our critical work protecting seeds, the environment and the food supply.

Liz, age 66, of Los Angeles CA, died suddenly on August 12, 2015 while hiking in Arizona.  She left us all the great legacy of a brilliant mind and a generous spirit.

Liz was born in New Haven CT, and educated in liberal arts at Vassar College, in Italian in Florence Italy, and in Philosophy at Columbia University.  She obtained a JD degree at USC, joined the law firm of Irell and Manella in LA, and practiced law for 15 years.

After retiring, she became a Certified Horticulturist and taught courses on native plants in the Gardening and Horticulture Program at UCLA Extension. Liz served as Executive Director of the Theodore Payne Society for Native Plants and Wildflowers, and as a Board President of the Southern California Horticultural Society.  She presented lectures and wrote articles on native plants in many venues, was on the staff of the Botanical Garden at UCLA, and served on the advisory board of the Mediterranean Garden Society.  She also became certified and practiced as a Holistic Health Coach.  Her background and interests intersected in the domains of food, sustainability and health.

Liz was an avid gardener specializing in native plants; one of her passions was growing fruits and vegetables at home.  Liz shared her intellect, her curiosity and sense of adventure with her husband Benjamin Zuckerman, astrophysicist and conservationist, as they traveled worldwide and hiked together often in the canyons and deserts of the Southwest.

Her untimely death diminishes us all, but her life enriched us.
